Melted Snowmen Cookies

Melted Snowmen Cookies are a super cute holiday treat and a fun way to get the kids helping in the kitchen! A sugar cookie base topped with homemade frosting, a marshmallow for the snowman, and decorative icing for the buttons, eyes, and nose.

Melted Snowmen Cookies

As my kids get older, it is so much fun to watch them become interested in cooking and baking with me.  Occasionally I’ll have one of them helping make dinner, but it’s when I’m baking something that they really want to help.  Any time they hear the mixer going, they know a treat is being made and they suddenly appear right next to me.  Melted Snowman Cookies were a great way for them to help me decorate!

Melted Snowmen Cookies

These Melted Snowman Cookies are such a cute holiday treat and definitely a great way to get the kids helping in the kitchen. This time of year especially is so fun to start traditions with your kids, and making and decorating sugar cookies is one of ours.

The base of these snowman cookies is my absolute favorite sugar cookie recipe. I have been making it for years and it never fails me. The flavors of vanilla and almond just can’t be beat in a sugar cookie and these turn out perfectly soft yet sturdy every time.

How to Decorate Melted Snowman Cookies

For the melted snowman decoration, it’s super easy.  I am, admittedly, not the best when it comes to decorating cakes, pies, and cookies, but I think these turned out so cute.  The only extra ingredients you will need are marshmallows and some decorating icing/gel.  The snowman’s head is the marshmallow and you draw on eyes and a nose with black and orange icing.

I found that cutting the marshmallows in half was a good height for the snowmen heads, but my 5 year old liked using the whole marshmallow.  A combination is cute, too.

Last, simply pipe on some buttons on the cookie, and that’s it.  These are a cute AND delicious holiday treat!

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter at room temperature
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus up to 1 more cup for flouring the rolling surface and rolling pin

For the Frosting:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 4-5 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

For Decorating:

  • Large Marshmallows
  • Black, orange, red, and green decorating gel/icing

Instructions

  • In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream together the sugar and butter until creamy.
  • Add the milk, vanilla, and almond extract, and mix to combine.
  • Add the eggs.
  • Finally, add the baking soda, salt, and flour.
  • Cover and chill the dough in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Roll out approximately one third of the chilled dough onto a floured surface, until it is about ⅛-1/4″ thick.
  • Cut the cookies into rounds, using a round cookie cutter.
  • Place the cut out cookies ½″ apart onto a parchment paper lined baking pan.
  • Bake 10-12 minutes, until the edges are very light brown.  You do not want the top of the cookies to be brown.
  • Cool the cookies completely on wire rack before frosting them.
  • To make the frosting, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and lemon juice in a medium bowl.
  • Beat with an electric mixer for 3 minutes, until well combined.

To decorate the cookies:

  • Spread a spoonful of the frosting on each round cookie.
  • Place either a full or half (depending on how melted you want it to look) of a marshmallow on the edge of the cookie.
  • Decorate on the eyes, nose, and buttons using the decorating gel/icing.
  • Serve and enjoy!
