Lars turned 8 months old on Monday! I know (I KNOW!) I say this every update but where does the time go?!
Life with Lars has become a lot busier in that he is now a man on the move! He started crawling a little after he turned 6 months old and I’m pretty sure we haven’t sat down since. Okay, that’s an exaggeration but he took off pretty fast with the crawling which quickly turned into pulling himself up onto everything (including the wall…what the heck?!)
Since pictures say way more than words, I figured I would recap the last 2 months with more photos.
The last two months started off after the holidays with the Hawkeyes going to the Rose Bowl! We don’t have to tell Lars the outcome of that games (ouch..) but I will tell him when he’s older that he’s been a Hawkeye fan from the start!
After the holidays and a couple of trips up North to the cabin, we were all hit pretty hard with a stomach flu. First Lars… then me… and finally Marc. It was nasty and the saddest thing to see our little guy not feeling well! It made it even worse to have to take care of him while we were knocked out ourselves.
In the picture on the left below Lars fell asleep on me for the first time in months (we’ve been “sleep training” so no more cuddly naps) which was so sweet and also showed how bad he really felt. In the photo on the right you can see in his eyes he didn’t feel well. As Grandma Jan would say – he didn’t have the sparkle in his eyes!
We also started swimming lessons in January. I wasn’t sure how he would like being in the water and being dunked, which we have to do multiple times each class, but he loves it! While he’s usually pretty squirmy and chatty, something about being in the warm water zens him out. All of the other parents in the class have commented how “chill” of a baby Lars is. Ha! If only they saw him at home.
Even though it’s been a fairly cold couple of months, once it gets above 25 degrees, I try to get him outside for a quick walk for some fresh air. It seriously does wonders for him because I feel like he starts to get antsy if we’re inside too much. Just like the rest of us, he likes a change in scenery! I make sure to bundle him up with lots of layers, always ending with his Patagonia bunting on top, which is seriously the coziest looking thing ever! I mean, don’t you wish they made them in our size?!
We also took advantage of a warm February day and did some winter hiking. I’ve mentioned before that Lars was not a fan of the Ergo Baby because he doesn’t like to face in, but he actually loved it when he was on my back facing in. I also think it helps that he’s out of that weird newborn phase where they’re just not sure what they want.
Another fun milestone? He’s sitting up in a shopping cart! Which means I no longer have to bring the car seat in which takes up the entire cart, or carry him in in his outward facing carrier…woohoo! Oh and yes, I took him to Total Wine.
The last two months have also been super fun as Lars and his cousin Finn are getting to ages where they can actually interact with each other. Since Lars is 2 months older he’s more mobile than Finn but they still do tummy time together and lots of “talking” while we hold the two of them. They are too funny (and cute!) together!
Other things he loves? His activity desk, bath time, putting EVERYTHING in his mouth, Maddie, screeching and screaming just to hear his own voice, and just generally always being on the go.
His latest thing is that he got his first tooth! And the second one is not far behind. This has, of course, come with a couple of nights of waking up when he usually doesn’t, and a couple of days of being really clingy on mama but for the most part, I feel like he’s been handling his teeth pretty well.
And lastly – one of my favorite parts of the past 2 months is all of the fun things Lars has been eating! I’m still mainly breastfeeding him, but have started feeding him solids 2-3 times a day. For the most part, Lars has liked almost everything I’ve made for him. Some of his favorites have been mixed berry oatmeal, apple and pear sauce, sweet potato, coconut milk, and coriander puree, pumpkin lentil and coconut curry puree, and he always loves bananas.
Some of his not-so-favorites have been green lentil soup puree and a chicken, spinach, tomato, and basil puree. Although I tried the chicken puree again last night and he gobbled it up! I guess it’s true what they say – even if they don’t like it – just keep trying!
We’ve also started giving him solids food like black beans, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese pieces, and I even had him try some salmon the other night (which he loved!). It’s so funny to see him experience new tastes and textures in his mouth.
For feeding we are transitioning from the Summer Infant Feeding Booster Seat to the Keekaroo Height Right High Chair since he’s a little squirm worm and is almost able to flip himself out of the booster seat. The Keekaroo high chair is height adjustable so it can be used for years…it fits up to 250 lbs!
Other products I love for mealtime are these Baby Bjorn bibs, OXO spoons, and these NUK silicone freezer trays for freezing the foods I make for Lars. We also still exclusively use Tommee Tippee bottles for when I am at work.
I think that’s it…We’ll be back tomorrow with more food!
