After I posted Lars’ 7 week update, I realized that while I talked a lot about what life is like with Lars, I didn’t really talk about what Lars is like! Bad mama.
Now that Lars is 2 months old (seriously – how did that happen?!) he is getting to the point where he is so much fun and is developing his own little personality. He is smily, goofy, loves to move around, and goes from content to HANGRY in approximately 2.4 seconds.
From the start, Lars has been a pretty active baby. He loves movement and really doesn’t like sitting or laying still for too long. There will be chunks of time (10-15 minutes) where we can lay on the couch with him on our lap, but soon enough he will start getting squirmy, and start vocalizing his desire to be moved around.
Whether it’s walking around or bouncing up and down while sitting on an exercise ball, he just likes to move. I guess all of the running I did during pregnancy got him used to moving around a lot! It’s also amazing how much he loves being outside. If he’s ever really fussy and nothing seems to be working, I’ll step outside and almost immediately he’ll settle down. He loves just walking up and down our block with me holding him and a lot of times this will put him to sleep.
These days, he will lay on his Play Yard for 20-25 minutes at a time just looking around, but that’s about it. After that he wants to be picked up. He is gaining more independence each day, but still really prefers being held and moved around. He also prefers being held outward as opposed to facing our chest which has limited our use of our Ergo Baby and Solly Baby wrap.
In his early days the Solly Baby wrap was great for putting him in and going to Target or getting things done around the house but now that he doesn’t really like facing in, and the Solly Baby is only made for inward facing, he hasn’t been a fan of the wrap. Hopefully he grows out of that and will start to like it again soon.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about things Lars likes and doesn’t like, it’s that if he doesn’t like something I shouldn’t write it off completely. He might not like it one day, but tolerate it the next. Persistence is key.
His favorite time of day is definitely the morning. I love our mornings together. He has typically been sleeping from 9 or 9:30 until anywhere between 4:30 and 6:30 (uh-MAZ-ing!) when he gets up to eat. Then he falls back asleep and will get up for the day around 7 or 8. I’ve been staying awake for that period between 6ish and 8ish to drink coffee, check emails, possibly bake something, and just have some time to myself.
After Lars gets up for the day, Lars will eat and we just hang out for an hour or so, smiling and cooing back and forth to each other. It’s seriously the best and my favorite part of the day, too.
Mid-morning we usually head out for a walk which ranges between 2 and 4 miles. Pretty much the second we hit the pavement, he is out for a nap. I absolutely love that the weather has been nice enough for us to enjoy our daily walks. That fresh air does wonders for both of us.
The past couple of weeks we have started going to Baby Yoga or Baby-Wearing Barre classes at a studio that is less than five minutes from our house. I still have a mini anxiety attack right before every class, as I get worried and stressed that he is going to have a meltdown in the middle of class, but every time I go I am reminded that even if he does – it doesn’t matter! There are typically 10-15 other babies in the classes that are all at some point crying, pooping, and squirming too. It’s been great for connecting with other new moms and getting more comfortable bringing him in public.
Other fun things about Lars? Like I said, he’s been smiling a ton which is SO fun! I love making him smile. He has also discovered that he likes his hands in his mouth, so he’s been sucking and gnawing on his hands. No thumb sucking yet, and he also hasn’t taken a strong liking to his pacifier. We use it sometimes to calm him down, but he typically spits it out after 15 or 30 seconds, so we’re not pushing it.
Well, that’s it for this months update. I can’t wait to see what the next month brings!
