Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

While it doesn't quite feel like summer (or even spring!) outside yet, even though it IS May, I'm hopeful that summertime is near. Sloppy Joes also come to mind when I think of get-togethers during the summer, because the meat is so easy to make ahead of time and keep warm in a slow cooker.  Don't get me wrong - I love my grilled meats.  But you have to feel bad for whoever is the one stuck standing over the grill cooking for everyone.  So on a weekend where maximizing the fun is high priority, sloppy joes win, and these Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are always a huge hit!

What You'll Need

  • Ground Beef
  • Onion
  • Green Bell Pepper
  • Garlic
  • Worcestershire
  • A-1
  • Beef Broth
  • Butter
  • Flour
  • Milk
  • Pepper Jack Cheese

How to Make Philly cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

To start, make the beef filling. Place a medium skillet over medium-high heat and cook the ground beef until is is browned and broken into smaller chunks. While the beef is cooking, I like to use this time to chop the veggies. Chop the onion and bell pepper and once the beef is cooked, add them to the pan. Cook until they are softened stirring frequently, about 5-7 minutes. Once the veggies are softened, add garlic and cook another minute.

Next, add the Worcestershire, A-1, and beef broth, and then cook another few minutes until the beef broth has mostly cooked off. Now, make the cheese sauce. I find when I am cooking a cheese sauce, it is best to have all of my ingredients pre-measured. At the very least, have them close-by as it comes together pretty quickly. Add the butter to a saucepan over medium heat, and melt. Next, add the flour and whisk together with the butter, cooking for about 1 minute.

Slowly add the milk, whisking to combine it with the butter and flour. Let it warm for a minute and then stir in the cheese until it has melted.

Assemble the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes by placing your desired amount of beef filling on the bottom of a bun. Then spoon over the cheese sauce and top with the bun. Serve and enjoy!
