I mentioned last week that I have been channeling my inner craftiness lately, and to tell you the truth, there’s really no end in sight. The crafting madness can’t be stopped! Actually, I’m sure after Christmas I’ll tame the beast but for now, bring on the crafts. The latest creation: homemade gifts. This idea actually started brewing after a random trip to Ikea with my mom resulting in the purchase of way too many glass jars. We bought them with the purpose of filling them with stuff and giving them as Christmas gifts, but we didn’t have any solid ideas of what we were going to fill them with.
Once again, Pinterest came to the rescue. Now the problem wasn’t what the heck do we fill these jars with?, but what don’t we fill these jars with? Finally, we chose this festive hot cocoa mix, and another (inedible) treat that I’ll be posting later this week.
These jars were pretty much a breeze to put together, and the most time consuming part was choosing which font to use for the label. Truthfully, the most important part of assembling these jars is that you have Christmas music playing and a glass of wine nearby. However, if you want more technical tips on how to make homemade gifts in jars, I would highly recommend visiting Maybe Matilda’s site which has a great step-by-step tutorial.
This recipe will fill a 1 quart jar, but we used smaller jars, just keeping the ratio of ingredients the same, which is pretty easy with the given measurements.
Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix
makes 1 quart (32 ounces), 12 servings
1 cup powdered milk
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup miniature chocolate chips
1/2 cup crushed candy canes
Layer powdered milk, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, chocolate chips, and candy canes in jars. Top jar with marshmallows until filled.
To make the cocoa: mix contents in a large bowl. Mix 1/3 cup of mix with 1 cup of boiling water. Top with additional marshmallows if you want. And why wouldn’t you?
